Daily Devotions (Sermon-Based)

Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the themes from the sermon entitled "Promises, Curses and Cures"

Day 1: Promises Kept Reading: Joshua 8:30-35, Deuteronomy 27:1-8

Devotional: God's faithfulness shines through in Joshua's obedience to Moses' instructions. Despite the challenges of leading over a million people across difficult terrain, Joshua prioritized fulfilling God's commands. This reminds us that God's promises are sure, and He empowers us to keep our commitments to Him. Reflect on promises you've made to God. How can you demonstrate faithfulness in keeping them, even when it's inconvenient? Ask God for strength to honor your commitments and trust in His unfailing promises.

Day 2: The Weight of the Law Reading: Deuteronomy 27:14-26, Romans 3:19-26

Devotional: The curses pronounced on Mount Ebal reveal the seriousness of sin and our inability to perfectly keep God's law. Each "Amen" uttered by the Israelites was an acknowledgment of their responsibility and the consequences of disobedience. Yet, this sobering reality points us to our desperate need for a Savior. Thank God that Christ became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13), freeing us from the law's condemnation. Consider areas in your life where you struggle with sin. Bring these before God, asking for His forgiveness and transforming power.

Day 3: The Lamb of God Reading: John 1:29-34, Isaiah 53:4-7

Devotional: John the Baptist's declaration of Jesus as the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" connects the Old Testament sacrificial system to Christ's ultimate sacrifice. Like the burnt offerings on Mount Ebal, Jesus offered Himself completely to atone for our sins. Meditate on the depth of God's love demonstrated through Christ's willingness to be our substitute. How does this sacrifice impact your daily life? Express your gratitude to God and consider how you can live in response to such amazing grace.

Day 4: Peace with God Reading: Colossians 1:19-23, Romans 5:1-11

Devotional: The peace offerings mentioned in Joshua 8 foreshadowed the ultimate peace we have through Christ. Because of His sacrifice, we are reconciled to God and can enjoy fellowship with Him. This peace surpasses understanding and guards our hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7). Reflect on what it means to have peace with God. How does this truth affect your approach to challenges and relationships? Ask God to help you fully embrace and live out this peace in your daily life.

Day 5: Remembering and Rejoicing Reading: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Psalm 103:1-5

Devotional: Just as the Israelites built an altar to remember God's faithfulness, we have the Lord's Supper as a tangible reminder of Christ's sacrifice. This act of remembrance is not meant to be somber, but a celebration of our redemption and ongoing fellowship with God. Take time to recall specific ways God has shown His faithfulness in your life. How can you cultivate a habit of remembrance and gratitude? Consider creating a personal "altar" or practice to regularly remind yourself of God's goodness and grace.
