Daily Devotions (Sermon-Based)
Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the themes from the sermon entitled "Decision Day "
Day 1: Remembering God's Faithfulness
Reading: Joshua 24:1-13
Devotional: Joshua gathered Israel to recount God's faithfulness—from calling Abraham out of idol worship to delivering them into the Promised Land. Before we can make commitments to God, we must remember what He has already done. Take time today to trace God's hand in your own story. Where has He rescued you? What has He provided that you didn't earn? When we recognize that our cities, opportunities, and blessings come from His hand, gratitude replaces entitlement. Write down three specific ways God has been faithful to you this year. Let these memories anchor your commitment to serve Him alone, not the convenient gods of comfort or the cultural gods of success.
Day 2: The Danger of Divided Loyalty
Reading: Genesis 35:1-4; Joshua 24:14-15
Devotional: Joshua's challenge was clear: you cannot serve both Yahweh and other gods. The Israelites had physically left Egypt, but many still carried household idols in their baggage. What are you carrying that competes with Christ? Perhaps it's the "convenient Jesus" you call on only in emergencies, or the cultural Jesus molded to fit your political preferences. True worship demands we bury our idols—the pursuit of comfort, the craving for approval, the trust in our own strength. God will not share His glory with another. Today, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any divided loyalties in your heart. What needs to be buried under the oak tree so you can worship the Most High God with wholehearted devotion?
Day 3: The Cost of Following the Holy God
Reading: Joshua 24:19-24; Isaiah 42:8
Devotional: When Israel promised to serve God, Joshua responded with a shocking statement: "You cannot serve the Lord, for He is a holy God." Joshua understood that casual commitment crumbles under pressure. Following the Most High God isn't about adding Him to your collection of helpful beliefs; it's about surrendering everything to His lordship. Holiness demands holiness. God's jealousy for your heart isn't petty—it's protective. He knows that divided worship destroys you. The Israelites declared three times they would serve God, yet Joshua saw the idols they refused to release. Examine your life today: Are you making promises to God while clutching onto things that contradict those promises? True commitment costs everything, but it gains the One who is worth more than all.
Day 4: The Most High God Made Low
Reading: Philippians 2:5-11
Devotional: The stunning reality of Christmas and Easter is this: the Most High God became the most lowly human to die the most shameful death for our shameful sin. Jesus, who possessed all authority in heaven and earth, emptied Himself to become a servant. He who created the stars was born in a stable. He who spoke galaxies into existence was mocked by His creation. Why? Because He loved you that much. This isn't a dashboard Jesus or a good-luck charm—this is the King of Kings who humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross. Today, let this truth reshape how you approach Him. Come with awe, with reverence, with gratitude that breaks your heart. The God who needs nothing chose to need you.
Day 5: Making Your Declaration of Dependence
Reading: Joshua 24:25-31; Matthew 28:18-20
Devotional: Joshua erected a stone witness to mark Israel's covenant commitment. What will mark yours? The Israelites served God faithfully during Joshua's lifetime, but the next generation forgot. Legacy isn't automatic—it requires intentional choices repeated daily. Today, write your own declaration of dependence on God. Like Joshua, declare: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." But don't stop there. Put away the false gods—the ones you inherited from family traditions that contradict Scripture, and the ones promoted by American culture that distort Jesus into your image. Make your commitment public. Tell someone. Create your own memorial stone—something that will remind you in weak moments that you chose the Most High God. Then live today as someone who serves the One who holds all authority in heaven and on earth.
